Melanie, Lili, and I came together with a desire to exercise our shared love for hosting and passion for analog, real-world connection. So, we created a dinner party experience called The Supper Club. Over the course of one month, we fundraised over $1,000, secured a venue, sent out paper invitations and received in-person RSVPs (a novelty these days), enlisted a three-piece jazz band, constructed and shopped for a three-course menu, built serving dishes, compiled to-go bags for each guest, and created “conversation cards” meant to stimulate conversations between guests, many of whom had never spoken before. Ultimately, we treated 60 people to a dinner party at four seatings over the course of two days. It was a labor of love and an experiment in theatrical liveness. It resulted in a number of new friendships, a greater depth in old friendships, and an experience that we’re still asked about all the time—making our efforts a wild success.
